Don't get turned away at the gate
One of the most common reasons travellers are denied boarding to Europe is failing to meet passport-validity rules. Your ETIAS approval means nothing if your passport itself does not qualify. Two rules matter most.
The 3-month rule
Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you intend to leave the Schengen Area. For example, if you plan to depart Europe on 1 August, your passport must not expire before 1 November. Many travellers leave extra margin to be safe.
The 10-year rule
Your passport must also have been issued within the last 10 years. Even if it still has months of validity left, border guards will reject it if the issue date is more than a decade ago — a frequent problem for passports that were renewed early and carry extra months.
Biometric passports and the new border
Europe's Entry/Exit System (EES) reads your passport at automated kiosks and records your biometrics. A modern machine-readable, biometric passport makes crossings smoother. Check that yours is undamaged and the photo page is intact.

Frequently asked questions
How much passport validity do I need for Europe?
At least three months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area. Leaving more margin is recommended.
What is the 10-year passport rule?
Your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years. An issue date older than 10 years can be rejected even if the expiry date is still in the future.
Does ETIAS check my passport validity?
ETIAS is linked to a specific passport, but approval does not guarantee you meet the separate 3-month and 10-year validity rules — always check your passport independently.
Can I travel with a damaged passport?
A damaged or unreadable passport can be refused, especially with biometric EES kiosks. Renew it before you travel if in doubt.
