Newark Liberty International Airport · EWR

Layover at Newark (EWR): do you need an ESTA?

There is no airside transit in the United States. Everyone who connects at Newark Liberty International Airport goes through US immigration, so a Visa Waiver traveller needs an ESTA, and most other passports a US visa, even just to change planes.

The rule at this airport

Visa Waiver Program passports: an ESTA (or a visa) is needed even to transit. On the form, the US address is "In Transit" plus your final destination.
Other passports: a US visa is needed for the connection.
US citizens, and Canadian and Bermudian citizens, need neither.

Charta Visa is an independent private service, not a government agency. These answers come from official rules; airlines and border officers make the final check, and a travel authorization lets you board but does not guarantee entry.
